Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality is an online experience that combines both real-world experiences and computer-generated content. “AR uses computer hardware and software, such as apps, consoles, screens, or projections, to combine digital information with the real-world environment.” (Hayes, 2024) Augmented reality provides students opportunities that would not be feasible without the technology. AR creates a hands-on interactive enviornment for students to learn. There is an app called “Dinosaur 4D+”, this app allows students to see 3D dinosaurs and interact with them. This provides students an opportunity to grasp dinosaurs and their features visually which is not possible without the capability. As a science teacher, Google Expeditions is another AR application that is very useful. Students are able to see things like volcanoes and storms and explore these processes. AR also enables students to be able to easily access learning material no matter what time it is or where they are. AR can also be used in the professional development of teachers through modules and experiences to better the educator. Although there are many benefits to AR, there are also some disadvantages. There are issues with the cost and time it takes to create AR experiences by professionals. AR also can threaten the privacy of its users as it requires the continuous sensing of data. Lastly, AR can threaten physical health as it can create eye strain and motion sickness for some users.
CoSpaces is an AR application that allows students to create 3D experiences that can be animated and manipulated with coding. CoSpaces enables students to demonstrate their learned knowledge in building interactive applications on line. CoSpaces also helps foster creativity and collaboration in the classroom which are essential skills as students progress in education. While Cospaces can be seen as a beneficial tool, there are also some dangers associated with the application. From attempting to use CoSpaces myself, I can see that it is a very complicated application that needs lots of direction. CoSpaces also an application that has a subscription service. There is a free version, but gives limited access to users. This could be a problem for school districts who wish to implement the application.
